No. 3 Sharks Roll Sonoma State 4-0 for West Region I Win

KAILUA, Hawai'i – No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific University took care of business on Mothers' Day Sunday by dispatching Sonoma State 4-0 in the NCAA Division II West Regional I at the Kailua Racquet Club.
 
The third ranked Sharks (16-4) needed just over two hours in downing the Seawolves (9-7) to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., a suburb of Orlando.
 
HPU claimed the doubles point without trailing on any court, then collected singles wins at positions three, five and six to clinch the match.
 
The Sharks were powerful in doubles action led by the 17th doubles team of Valentin Masse and Maxime Gayte who rolled at No. 1 over Nate Oppenheim and Max Nudell 6-2. The Sharks clinched the when the No. 3 duo of Benjamin Loccisano and Ondrej Ctverak beat Santiago Sarudiansky and Harren Cohen 6-4.  HPU's Lukas Bauer and Cheng-Chieh Wang were leading 5-4 at No. 2 over Igor Pissarenko and Alec Wong when the Sharks Wang was hit by a tennis ball and took a medical timeout. Loccisano/Ctverak clinched the match to win the point and the Bauer/Wang set went unfinished.
 
The middle and bottom of the Sharks singles lineup came through to send HPU to Florida.
 
Loccisano, playing at No. 3 singles, was the first to add to the Sharks point total, beating Nudell 6-1, 6-2. Just a few minutes later, Bauer, who moved up to No. 5 singles with Wang pulled, completed his match with a 6-1, 6-1 win oagainst Josh Liu for a 3-0 lead.
 
Lucas Poock gave HPU the win. Subbing in at No. 6, Poock downed Sonoma's Wong 6-3, 6-3 for the ending point.
 
The best match of the day was the unfinished battle at No. 1. Masse, ranked 21st nationally, was locked into a duel with SSU's Oppenheim. The two stayed on serve through the first set for 11 games before Masse broke Oppenheim with a deciding point for a 7-5 win. In the unfinished second set the two were again on serve with Masse leading 4-3 when the match was clinched.
 
Sonoma State was ahead at No. 2 with Sarudiansky leading Ctverak 6-2, 3-1 when pulled, and 44th ranked Gayte lost the first set at No. 4 to Pissarenko 3-6, but held a 4-3 lead in the second set when the match was over.
 
HPU plays again in the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 on Tuesday, May 21 in Altamonte Springs. Their opponent will be determined after the bracket is seeded later this week.
