No. 22 Vulcans Upset No. 3 Sharks 4-2

HONOLULU – No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific University was upset on Saturday by No. 22 Hawai'i Hilo 4-2 at the Ala Moana Park Tennis Center.
 
The third ranked Sharks (10-3) lost their second straight match, while the 22nd ranked Vulcans (10-3) picked up a big victory for the rankings.
 
The Vulcans started off by grabbing the doubles point as UHH's Luca Checchia and Alan Cincunegui won at the third flight over the Sharks Benjamin Loccisano and Ondrej Ctverak 6-4. Then Marin Soukal and Vaclav Slezak stunned fourth-ranked Maxime Gayte and Valentin Masse 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Lukas Bauer and Cheng-Chieh Wang of HPU held a 5-4 lead against Alessandro Giuliato and Chun En Wu when the Vulcans wrapped up the point.
 
The Sharks battled back in singles play, taking the lead 2-1 as 66th ranked Loccisano beat Wu 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4, and 29th ranked Gayte downed Auturo Dell'eva 6-3, 6-4.
 
UHH rallied back starting with the featured No. 1 spot. The Vulcans 12th ranked Slezak outdueled 19th ranked Masse 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 with Slezak taking the final set tiebreaker 7-2. Giuliato, ranked 17th in singles, took No. 2 against Ctverak 6-3, 7-5 for the 3-2 lead.
 
The Vulcans won the match as 42nd ranked Soukal took a hard-fought three set win over the Sharks Wang 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3.
 
Bauer was down a set to Checchia 4-6, 1-0 at No. 6 when the match was halted.
 
The Sharks concluded regular season home slate with the loss. They are back in action next week when HPU travels to Florida for a three-match swing starting Thursday at No. 9 Flagler in Saint Augustine, Fla. The Sharks meet No. 4 Saint Leo (Fla.) on Friday and Embry-Riddle (Fla.) on Saturday in neutral site matches in Altamonte Springs, Fla., before heading to the PacWest Conference Tournament in Surprize, Ariz., the following week.
