HONOLULU – No. 10 Hawai'i Pacific University bounced back from two losses to Division I opponents last week by rolling neighbor island foe Hawai'i Hilo 4-0 on Saturday at Ala Moana Park.
The Sharks (9-5) who fell from fifth with last week's losses, dropped only one set to the Vulcans (4-10).
HPU got the ball rolling by claiming the doubles point, starting at the top as
Elisa Elhadj and
Elodie Busson shut out Marina Colvee Debrot and Irena Le 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Then
Heloise Le Normand and
Debora Echeverria handed Gabrielle Aguliar Lawlor and Sandra Dafincescu a 6-2 loss at No. 3 to go up 1-0.
Mihoki Miyahara and
Sarah Ikioka were knotted at 3-3 against Anouk van Houk and Carmelle Joyner when play stopped after the point was awarded.
The Sharks got three wins in singles to finish off the Vulcans.
Ikioka started things at No. 5 in beating Aguliar Lawlor 6-1, 6-4, just before Miyahara dropped van Houk 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Elhadj ended the match at No. 2 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Dafincescu to chalk up the shutout.
HPU was on the verge of two more wins, with 14th ranked Busson up 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles over Colvee Debrot, and Echeverria leading 6-2, 4-3 against Joyner at No. 4. HPU's
Nicole Ballach was ahead of Hina Nishida 3-0 when play was called.
The Sharks close their home season on Monday at Ala Moana Park when they host cross-town rival Chaminade. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
