Box Score ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 3 Hawai'i Pacific University needed just a bit over two hours to shut out No. 50 Southern New Hampshire 4-0 in the round of 16 of the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships on Tuesday at Sanlando Park.
The Sharks (17-4), the number three seed in the tournament, advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals with the win. The Penmen (17-4), the number 14 seed saw their season come to an end.
The Sharks did not lose a set in the contest, winning the doubles point and claiming the first three singles matches completed.
HPU won at No. 2 singles with
Lukas Bauer and
Cheng-Chieh Wang beating Miguel Marreiros and Fernando Torres 6-1, quickly followed by
Benjamin Loccisano and
Ondrej Ctverak taking No. 3 against Tiago Fernandes and Ricardo Marreiros 6-4. The Sharks No. 17 doubles pair of Valentin Masse and
Maxime Gayte were trailing SNHU's Willem van Biezen and Bas Van Biezen 5-3 when play was called.
The Sharks dominated in singles, with 21st ranked Masse quickly taking Fernandes at No. 1 6-1, 6-2. Bauer followed at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ricardo Marreiros 6-3, 6-2 for the 3-0 lead.
Wang wrapped up the day for the Sharks by beating Miguel Marreiro 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarters for the 14th time in school history.
HPU will take on No. 12 Southwest Baptist, the sixth seed, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. HST (4 p.m. EDT) in the quarterfinals. SBU downed No. 27 Concordia (N.Y.), the 11th seed, 4-1 to move on in the tournament.
