WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – No. 9 Hawai'i Pacific University lost and won on Friday, playing a pair of matches on the season's second day. The Sharks fell to defending NCAA Division III runnerup Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-2 in the morning, then beat Pacific (Ore.) 7-0 in the afternoon.
The Sharks (2-1) dropped a close match with the Stags (2-0) before handing the Boxers (0-2) the shutout.
Against CMS, ranked second in Division III, the Sharks got a singles point and a doubles win by
Benjamin Loccisano. Loccisano beat Nikolai Parodi 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and teamed with
Ondrej Ctverak to beat Parodi and Ian Freer 6-3.
The Sharks also scored a point at No. 6 singles as
Lucas Poock ripped Matthew Jacobs 6-2, 6-1.
The rest of the match went to Pacific.
The Boxers claimed the doubles point by first winning at No. 3 with Jake Berber/Daniel Park beating
Ryohei Arai/
Cheng-Chieh Wang 6-4. Then Pacific's Jack Katzman/Robert Liu used a tiebreaker at No. 2 to edge Poock and
Matej Panik 7-6 (7-4).
In singles, Katzman downed Arai 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2, Nic Meister defeated Ctverak 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, and Freer beat Panik 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
One position ended unfinished at No.5, as HPU's Wang and Liu split the first two sets 7-6, 0-6. Liu held a 2-1 lead in the final set when Freer's victory gave CMS the match win.
Following a brief rain shower, HPU swept away Pacific 7-0.
The Sharks won doubles thanks to Wang and
Guilherme De Medeiros taking a 6-0 win at No. 3 against Quentin Gonzalea/Sean Murphy, and Panik/Poock winning in a tiebreaker over Koby and Rayden Murata 7-6 (7-4). The Sharks No. 1 team fell for the first time this season as Loccisano/Ctverak dropped a 6-4 decision to Reyn Miyagawa/Joey Hu.
HPU swept all six singles positions, starting with Loccisano ripping Miyagawa 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, and Arai downing Rayden Murata 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Panik moved up to No. 3 to beat Murphy 6-2, 6-2, while Wang took Hu 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 4. At No. 5 Poock beat Gonzalezz 6-2, 6-3, and De Medeiros defeated Joey Balleweg 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Sharks take Saturday off before closing their opening weekend on Sunday against the California Institute of Technology in a 4 p.m. match at Punahou School.
