WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific University dropped its opening match to the No. 2 team in NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Center.
The Sharks (0-1) claimed a singles point against the defending Division III runner-up Athenas (1-0) in the season opener for both teams.
The Sharks win came at No. 3 singles when
Mihoki Miyahara defeated Sydney Lee 6-3, 6-1.
CMS took all three doubles sets for the doubles point as Catherine Allen/Caroline Cox beat Miyahara and
Marleen Tilgner 7-5 at No. 1, Anna Kern/Crystal Juan downed
Elodie Busson/
Heloise Le Normand 6-2 at No. 2, and Nicole Tan/Sarah Bahsoun defeated
Sarah Ikioka/
Nicole Ballach 6-2 at No. 3.
The Athenas then took five of the six singles positions.
Justine Leong won at No. 1 against Busson 6-4, 6-4, and Allen beat Tilgner 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2. At No. 4, Cox downed Ikioka 6-3, 6-4, Bahsoun defeated Le Normand 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at No. 5, and Ana Bryan-Ajania edged Ballach 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 6.
The Sharks and the Athenas meet again on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., this time at the Kamehameha-Kapalama High Tennis Courts.
