HONOLULU – No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific University took it to the very end, but fell for the second consecutive day to the No. 2 team in NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, as CMS pulled out a 4-3 win on Saturday at the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama campus.
The Sharks (0-2) took the doubles point against the defending Division III runner-up Athenas (2-0) but could only get two of the singles points.
Mihoki Miyahara and
Heloise Le Normand were the stars for the Sharks, both winning singles matches and leading their pairings to doubles wins.
Miyahara teamed with
Marleen Tilgner to win at No. 1 doubles over Catherine Allen/Caroline Cox 6-3, then won at No. 2 singles beating Rebecca Berger 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Le Normand paired with
Bianca Schulhof for a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Madison Shea/Gabby Lee. She pulled the double with a victory at No. 4 singles over Nicole Tan 6-1, 6-4.
The Athenas took No. 2 doubles with Justine Leong/Sarah Bahsoun beating Sara Ikioka/
Nicole Ballach 6-4.
In singles play, Leong led CMS by beating Tilgner at No. 1 6-4, 7-5, with Crystal Juan taking No. 3 against Ikioka 6-2, 6-2. At No. 6, Devon Wolfe defeated
Jayme Waites 6-0, 6-0, and Sydney Lee claimed No. 5 against Ballach 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
The Sharks are idle until Valentine's Day, when they take on UC San Diego in a neutral site contest at the Houla Tennis Center in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.
