Junior Tavon Tarpley of McLean, Va./Langley came off the bench with 16 points, while senior Ronald Blain of McDonough, Ga./Union Grove just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. HPU jumped out to an early lead, starting with a layup from Blain that went on to an 14-5 run for a nine-point lead on a 3-pointer from redshirt freshman Ryan Godges of Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos. But the Hawks battled back, using a 10-0 run to take a lead at 19-17 on a 3-pointer from Odom. The game of runs continued after another Godges triple, with HNU posting an 8-0 run to claim a seven-point 27-20 lead on a Dennis Anthony jumper. The Sharks responded with triples by Viney and Foy, then Blain put the Sharks up with a layup for an 8-0 run and a 28-27 lead at halftime.

The first six minutes of the second half witnessed four ties and five lead changes. HPU made it a sixth lead change on a jumper by Viney to start a 6-0 run and open a five-point lead midway through the half. The Hawks responded with a 8-1 run to lead to regain a lead.

With a four-point HNU lead with 3:17 remaining, HPU rallied with a 5-0 run to lead 56-55 with 1:25 left on a layup by freshman Trey Chapman of Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg.
