Box Score HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University held a lead late in the first half, but the University of Hawai'i roared out of the halftime break to hand the Sharks an 83-50 loss at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The contest was an exhibition game for the Sharks, while the Rainbow Warriors (1-0) officially opened the season with the win.
The Sharks were led by senior
David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark who scored 12 points while adding five rebounds. Senior
Chidozie Ndu of Lagos, Nigeria led HPU with six rebounds. Junior
Jacob Foy of Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier added nine points.
UH was paced by the inside play of James Jean-Marie who double-doubled with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Mate Colina added 17 points with six boards for the Rainbow Warriors.
HPU shot 39 percent (20-of-52) from the field, hitting 5-of-19 (26 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks hit 5-of-9 (56 percent) from the foul line. UH hit 30-63 (48 percent) from the floor, with 6-of-20 (30 percent) from the arc. The Warriors made 17-of-22 (77 percent) from the charity stripe. The Division I Warriors outrebounded HPU 44-28.
The first half was a battle, with the teams swapping the lead six times and sporting five ties.
HPU had a four-point lead with seven minutes to play in the opening half on a Rowlands jumper in the lane, and used another bucket by Rowlands to take a 23-21 lead with 2:55 remaining in the half.
But the Rainbow Warriors went on a 9-2 run in the final three minutes to lead 30-25 at halftime.
Then coming out of the halftime break, UH shot 73 percent from the floor during a 27-6 run and never let the Sharks get close.
It's the lone game on the HPU schedule thus far this season, as the PacWest Conference is expected to resume play in mid-January.
