KAMUELA, Hawai'i – No. 9 Hawai'i Pacific University fell to a Division II team for the first time this season as UC San Diego beat HPU 4-2 on Saturday at the Mauna Lani Sports & Fitness Center.
The Sharks (3-3) took the top two singles spots, but lost the doubles point to the Tritons (5-1) along with three singles positions.
The Sharks collected a win at No. 1 singles with
Benjamin Loccisano beating Sahm Irvine 7-6, 6-1, while
Ondrej Ctverak downed Marc Isaia 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. HPU also won the No. 3 doubles set with
Ryohei Arai/
Cheng-Chieh Wang beat Isaia/Marius Ruh 6-4.
But the loss of the doubles point hampered the Sharks. The Tritons won at No. 1 as Sreeganeshn Manoharan/Phillip Lan downed Loccisano/Ctverak 6-2, then Cody Duong/Neil Tengbumroong defeated
Marcel Hornung/
Matej Panik 6-4 to take the 1-0 lead.
Duong put UCSD up 2-0 with a win at No. 6 against Wang 6-0, 6-4. The Sharks tied the match with the wins by Ctverak and Loccisano.
The Tritons went back up with Lan taking Arai 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, and clinched the match with Manoharan triumph at No. 5 over Panik 6-4, 6-3.
The No. 4 spot went unfinished as Hornung led in the third set over Tengbumroong 6-2, 4-6, 2-1.
The Sharks are back at it on Sunday as they face No. 10 Hawai'i Hilo at 10:30 a.m. at Mauna Lani.
