HPU Sweeps Chaminade To Open PacWest Action

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University opened PacWest Conference play with a doubleheader sweep over cross-town rival Chaminade at Howard Okita Field.

The Sharks (7-4, 2-0) took an extra frame in game one to bring home the 4-3 win to finish off the Swords (2-2, 0-2). Game two was all Sharks with an 8-0 shutout in six innings including 6 runs in the fifth frame.

In game one, the Silverswords started things off in the first frame with a run on two hits, and HPU responded in the third as senior Brazzlyn Tovio-Asato of Kapolei, Hawai'i/University Lab reached on a Chaminade fielding error. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and was brought home by a line drive to center field from junior Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell. Senior Sierra Dias of Mililani, Hawai'i/Bishop Gorman singled to advance Curran and then stole second. The Sharks took the lead on a wild pitch to score Curran, and Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City, who reached on a walk, attempted to steal to score Dias making it 3-1 Sharks.

Chaminade answered back in the fourth loading the bases and scoring on a line drive to center with one out. The Sharks were able to finish out the frame without giving up another run to maintain a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh frame, three HPU fielding errors filled the bases, and a sacrifice fly to right field scored the tying run.

The game winning run came in the eighth inning with a lead-off triple to right center from Curran. Dias brought her home with her own towering base hit to end it at 4-3.

Freshman right-hander Ashlee Laver of Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge threw her second complete game allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts. She took the win on game one bringing her to 2-1 on the season.

Chaminade's Madelyn Stockslager also threw her second complete game allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks. She picked up two strikeouts but suffered her first loss of the year.

Game two started off a little slower, but the silence was broken by Curran again with a huge triple to dead center field. She scored on a Chaminade fielding error to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead after three.

In the fifth, they added two to their lead with junior Ashley Iseri of Cerritos, Calif./Whitney racking a double to left field, and Curran tallying yet another base hit to advance her. After stealing second both Curran and Iseri scored on a hit from Dias. Run number four was scored on a double Chaminade error. After loading the bases, senior Miki Takara of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Maryknoll tallied a three RBI double to left center to send the Sharks up 7-0.

In the sixth and final inning, Iseri singled to left field, Curran followed with her own single, and both advanced on a ground out. The mercy rule run was brought in by freshman Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehemeha-Kapalama with a base hit just outside of the infield.

HPU junior righty Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista pitched all six innings allowing just one hit with two walks. She picked up her fourth win of the year bringing her to 4-1.

Chaminade's Taylor Genera threw all six innings for her second complete game giving up eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits with four walks. She takes her first loss of the season and moves to 2-1.
