No. 10 Concordia Irvine Sweeps Twinbill From Sharks

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at No. 10 Concordia Irvine posted 7-1 and 8-2 victories at Howard Okita Field.

The Sharks (7-6, 2-2) lost for the first time this season at home, while the Eagles (10-1, 4-0) extended their winning streak to eight straight.

Sophomore second baseman Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua led the Sharks on the day, going 3-for-5 with two walks, including a 2-for-3 second game. Sophomore shortstop Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll was 2-for-3 in the second contest as well.

First game starter Malia Torres (4-3) of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista was touched up for four runs, only one earned, in four innings on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Reliever Megan Wilson of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch went three innings allowing three runs, two earned on six hits and three walks with a strikeout.

The Eagles roughed up game two starter, freshman Ashley Laver of Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge, for six runs, four earned, on three hits and seven walks. Wilson relieved again, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks.

CUI got a run in the second inning of game one when Michelle Lieng tripled to lead off the inning and Mackenzie Graham followed with an RBI single for the 1-0 lead.

Torres kept it that way until the fourth inning when the Eagles took advantage of two Shark errors to explode for three runs in the inning on RBI singles from Sydni Cruz and Megan Massa and a bases loaded walk to Lauren Lopez for a 4-0 advantage.

The Eagles added another run before HPU collected its only run of the contest in the sixth on a fielding error by CUI. The Eagles scored two more in the seventh on an RBI double from Sarah Kretschmar and another HPU error to win 7-1.

Callie Nunes (4-0) picked up the win, going five innings allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Erika Morris relieved, allowing the one unearned run on one hit with a walk and three strikeouts.

In game two, Concordia ripped HPU for three first inning runs, scoring on a throwing error, a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fourth the Eagles plated three more with an RBI double and a 2-RBI double, the last by Lieng, for a 6-0 lead.

HPU answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a throwing error and an RBI double from Tanigawa.  CUI added two more in the sixth for the final 8-2 win as the game was halted due to darkness after the inning.
