WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University opened its PacWest Conference season on Saturday taking Azusa Pacific the distance before settling for a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
The Sharks (2-4-1, 0-0-1) got on the scoreboard first in the match, only to have the Cougars (5-1-2, 1-0-1) knot the contest. The teams were even through the extra 20 minutes.
HPU got on the first goal in the 62nd minute when sophomore
Leandro Weingartner of Ober-Moerlen, Germany scored his first of the season when he collected an unassisted goal on a free kick at the top of the box to put the Sharks up 1-0.
That score held until the 76th minute when Victor Ramos tallied his second goal of the year as he put the ball in the net from the assist of David Medeiros.
The big star of the night for the Sharks was Senior goalkeeper
Jeremy Zielinski of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead who chalked up eight saves in facing 20 Azusa shots. There was also one team save credited.
Cougar goalkeeper Brendan Fix had only one save against the goal allowed in the contest as HPU put only two of its 13 shots on goal. The APU defense blocked six other attempts.
The Sharks had six shot attempts in the overtime, while the Cougars had four.
HPU is idle until next Sunday, Oct. 10 when the Sharks host cross-town rival Chaminade in PacWest Conference play. Kickoff at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium is slated for 5 p.m.
