Sea Lions Sweep Sharks

SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped a straight sets decision to Point Loma in PacWest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Golden Gym.

The Sharks (4-18, 3-11) lost to the Sea Lions (14-9, 10-5) 25-12, 25-22, 25-15 for their fourth straight loss.

The Sharks posted a .105 attack percentage with 2.0 team blocks, as PLNU hit .301 with 12.0 team blocks in the three-set affair.

Sophomore Ella Dotson of Tucson, Ariz./Marana led the way for the Sharks, recording eight kills, while junior Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow tallied seven kills with a block. Freshman Avery Percival of Riverside, Calif./King tallied 11 digs in the contest.

Point Loma's Sea Lions were Paced by the duo of Claire Smith and Bailey Williams. The pair recorded nine kills each, with Smith hitting .364 and Williams .350. Anna Massari led the match with five blocks.

The Sharks never had a lead or tied the Sea Lions in the first and third sets, but HPU battled in the second set holding a lead for a good portion of the way with eight ties in the set.

The Sharks grabbed the lead and fought off the Sea Lions to the 18-17 mark. But PLNU went on a 3-0 run to take the lead 21-19. HPU battled back to within a point at 23-22 on a Winters kill, but a block by Massari and a kill from Williams ended the threat and gave the Sea Lions the 25-22 set win.

The first and third sets were similar in that Point Loma jumped out to strong leads at the start and the Sharks could never get back.

HPU returns to Honolulu for a big home stand that just got a bit bigger. The postponed Azusa Pacific match will be made up on Tuesday, Nov. 9 in a 7 p.m. match in The Shark Tank. The Sharks next action is slated for Thursday, Nov. 4 against Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. in The Shark Tank.
