HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University was swept for a second straight match at home as Biola won in straight sets in PacWest Conference action Friday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (2-14, 1-7) fell to the Eagles (8-6, 4-2) 18-25, 22-25, 19-25 in the one hour, 20 minute match.
HPU hit .104 for the match with 6.0 team blocks. The Eagles hit a strong .246 with 6.0 team blocks.
Freshman
Karina Gatewood of Cerritos, Calif./Cypress led the Sharks with six kills, while junior
Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow posted five kills with a game-high five blocks. Senior
Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge collected 21 assists.
The Eagles were led by the outstanding play of Dani Bryant who hit .684 with 14 kills and two blocks. Abby Brewster added eight kills with a .500 hitting percentage and two blocks. Dominique Kirton and Madison Beebe had seven kills each.
The Sharks never led in the first set, but exchanged the lead a few times in the second and held a 22-21 advantage late. But the Eagles rallied for the next four points to take that set.
In the final set, HPU scored the first point but saw Biola jump out to a lead. HPU pulled within a point at 20-19 only to see the Eagles collect the last five points for the match.
HPU has a few days off before continuing the PacWest homestand on Thursday by hosting Holy Names. The match's first serve is slated for 7 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
