Sharks Shock Cougars In Five Again

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University did it for a second time in three days, upsetting Azusa Pacific in five sets at The Shark Tank.

The Sharks (7-19, 6-12) won their third straight in dumping the Cougars (16-8, 11-5) 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 15-9. APU has now lost four straight, all on Oahu.

The Sharks hit just .168, but chalked up 63 kills with 10.0 team blocks. The Cougars posted a .189 attack percentage with 12.0 team blocks.

HPU had five players collect double-digit kills, led by sophomore Ella Dotson of Tucson, Ariz./Marana who recorded her second straight double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs to go with a team leading five blocks. Senior Emily Joseph of Modesto, Calif./Gregori tallied 12 kills with a team-best .318 attack percentage, with senior Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union added 11 kills with five blocks. Senior Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah and junior Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow both put up 10 kills.

Azusa was led by Annaka Jorgenson who had a double-double of 18 kills and 11 digs, while Kyra Palmbush added 17 kills with four blocks. Kaitlin Craig posted 10 kills, hit .364 and had a team-leading five blocks.

The Sharks fell in the first set 25-21, but overcame a 16-10 deficit to get the set tied at 19-19 before APU closed the set on a 6-2 run.

HPU bounced back in the second set. After battling to a 13-all tie, the Sharks used a kill from Winters to key a 5-0 run that featured two service aces by senior Cara McClean of Beaverton, Ore./Southridge to take an 18-13 lead. HPU then traded points with the Cougars until posting the 25-19 win.

The Sharks took the third set 25-23, despite trailing early. HPU used a 6-0 run to get out of the hole and never trailed again in the set. A 7-3 run capped by a Ferris kill gave the Sharks a cushion that they needed as APU rallied to pull within a point at 24-23. That's when Boynton-Brown ended the set with a kill for the win.

HPU led the fourth set early, but APU rallied with a 7-0 run and never looked back taking the 25-17 win.

In the deciding set, the teams traded the lead three times when the Sharks went on a 5-0 off the serve of freshman Avery Percival to take the 8-5 lead. The Sharks never let the Cougars get closer, closing out the match on an assisted block by McClean and Winters, to go with an APU attack error for the 15-9 triumph.

The Sharks close their home season on Saturday, when they host Point Loma for Senior Night in PacWest Conference play. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
