SEATTLE – No. 25 Hawai'i Pacific University responded from a loss on Saturday by beating Seattle Pacific 69-60 Monday afternoon at Brougham Pavilion.
The Sharks (2-1) swapped the lead with the Falcons (2-1) early before going on an 11-4 run to take the lead late in the opening quarter and never losing it again.
Junior

Amy Baum of Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary posted her first double-double of the season and threatened a triple-double with 17 points, and game-high marks of 10 rebounds and seven assists. Graduate student

The Falcons were led by Natalie Hoff with 18 points and six rebounds, while Abril Rexach Roure added 11 points and Ashley Alter tallied 10.
HPU connected on 42 percent from the field (24-of-57), that included 11-of-28 (39 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks hit 10-of-12 (83 percent) from the foul line. SPU shot 40 percent (23-of-58) from the floor, and only 2-of-16 (13 percent) from the arc. The Falcons made 12-of-14 (86 percent) from the charity stripe. The Sharks out-rebounded the Falcons 35-31, as both team tallied a dozen turnovers.
After swapping the lead early, the Sharks were down by four midway through the opening quarter when HPU used a pair of Zeldenryk free throws to start an 11-2 run capped by a Baum driving layup. A late jumper in the lane from SPU had HPU up 17-14 at the quarter.
The Sharks then started the second half on a 13-4 run as junior
Avery Cargill of Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman turned in her only points of the game on a steal and fast break layup to give the Sharks a 30-18 lead. The Sharks built their lead to 15 with a Zeldenryk 3-pointer in the quarter before settling for a 13-point 42-29 halftime lead following a Razo triple.
HPU kept the difference the same through the third quarter, holding a 57-44 lead the break after a Baum layup.
The Falcons had one more run left in them in the fourth, using an 8-0 run against the Sharks who were playing their third game in four days to pull the score to four at 59-55.
That's when Rowell busted a 3-pointer, and Razo followed with a layup for a 9-point lead. Hoff came back with a layup for SPU, but Baum erased any doubt for HPU with a 3-point bomb for a 10-point 67-57 advantage with 3:04 to go. SPU added a free throw and a field goal before Rowell made a pair of free throws to close out the contest and the 69-60 win.
The win closed the three-game swing to Washington state and now the Sharks get to remain in the state until January. The Sharks have a week to prepare for their home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 24 against Black Hills State in the Malika Sports Thanksgiving Classic at The Shark Tank.
