Sharks Women Fall to Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University saw its three-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday as Fresno Pacific claimed a 5-0 PacWest Conference win at Ramirez Field.

The Sharks (5-9-1, 4-4-1) closed their Northern California trip with the loss, while the Sunbirds (3-9, 3-4) won their third straight.

The Sunbirds wasted little time in staking their claim. FPU's lit the board in the 10th minute on a goal from Ariana Quintero, assisted by Tori De Leon for the 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later FPU made it 2-0 as De Leon got her second assist feeding Alexis Macias for the score and the early insurance.

The Sunbirds collected their third goal of the first half in the 24th minute scored by Ana Paula Fraiz unassisted and took the 3-0 lead into half.

FPU added two more scores in the second frame. Makayla Montoya found the net in the 61st minute before De Leon added a goal to go with her two assists in the 69th minute. Montoya got the helper for De Leon.

HPU split time in goal against FPU. Starting sophomore goalkeeper Madi DePhillips of Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep notched one save in facing eight first half shots and allowing the three goals. Senior Marissa Froio of Simi Valley, Calif./Royal played the second half with a save against four shots and the two goals allowed.

FPU starting keeper Brigitta Eggertsdottir posted four saves in 75 minutes, while Chiara Soergel played the final 15 minutes with one save as HPU totaled five shots in the contest.

The Sharks are scheduled to conclude the season on the Big Island against Hawai'i Hilo next week.
