HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University took a break from final exams on Wednesday to visit SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, but fell to Hawai'i 88-52.
The game, an exhibition contest for the Sharks (3-4, 0-2 PacWest) did not count against their record. The contest counted in the regular season Rainbow Warriors (4-3) who picked up the win.
The Rainbow Warriors jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the contest.
Senior
Rodney Hounshell of Richmond, Va./West Linn (Ore.) led the Sharks with 14 points, while junior
Trey Chapman of Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg added eight points and sophomore
Tucker Pellicci of Portland, Ore./Franklin scored six and led HPU with five rebounds.
The Rainbow Warriors got 23 points from Noel Coleman, with 16 points from Kamaka Hepa and Junior Madut, and 14 points from Jerome Desrosiers. Hepa and Desrosiers grabbed seven boards to pace UH.
HPU shot 36 percent from the floor (21-of-58), while making 5-of-20 (25 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU was 5-of-9 (56 percent) from the foul line. UH connected on 55 percent from the field (33-of-59), including a school record 18-of-31 (58 percent) from 3. The Warriors hit 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the charity stripe.
HPU held tough through the opening seven minutes, trailing by just two at 10-8 with 12:59 to go after a Pellicci turnaround jumper in the paint. But the Warriors went on a 17-2 run in the next five minutes and their lead was never threatened.
The Sharks return to games that count on Sunday when they take their first trip away from Oahu, visiting the Big Island for a PacWest Conference contest against Hawai'i Hilo. Tipoff at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo is scheduled for 3 p.m., following the women's game between the schools at 1.
