Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chaminade Defeats Sharks 113-80

HONOLULU – Chaminade used a 21-3 run to start the game and Hawai'i Pacific University found itself in a hole it couldn't climb out of as Chaminade ran off to a 113-80 PacWest Conference victory Friday night at McCabe Gymnasium.

The Sharks (0-6, 0-6) closed the gap to seven points in the last five minutes of the first half, only to see the Silverswords (3-1, 3-1) get the lead by 10 at halftime then go on a 27-5 run to start the second half.

The Sharks were led by senior David Rowlands of Dayton, Ohio/Moorpark, who collected 18 points with five assists. Sophomore Colton Martin of Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound posted 13 points, while junior Rodney Hounshell of Richmond, Va./West Linn (Ore.) posted 12 points and junior Jacob Foy of Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier recorded 10 points with a team-leading five rebounds.

The Swords got 24 points, seven rebounds and five steals from Sawyer Storms, with Jessiya Villa adding 19 points and seven assists. Isaac Amaral-Artharee scored 18 points, Kevin Kremer tossed in 12 and DeRaySeamster 11.

HPU shot 55 percent (33-of-59) from the floor, with 8-of-22 (36 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks connected on 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the free throw line. Chaminade shot 52 percent from the field (43-of-82), including 18-of-36 (50 percent) from the arc. The Swords hit 9-of-12 (75 percent) from the charity stripe. CUH outrebounded HPU 39-32, and the Sharks suffered 23 turnovers to the Swords 10.

CUH opened the game on an 8-0 run, then added to it for a 21-3 lead with five minutes gone in the opening half. The Sharks chipped back and closed the gap to seven with five minutes to go in the half on a Hounshell jumper. HPU and CUH swapped scores and still trailed by seven on a Foy jumper with 2:43 in the half. But that was as close as the Sharks would get as the Swords wrapped up the first frame with a 56-46 advantage.

The it was all Chaminade in the second, opening with a 27-5 run and never looking back. When the dust cleared the Silverswords held a 113-80 final score.

HPU doesn't have much time to dwell on the loss, as the Sharks and Swords battle for the third time in five days on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at McCabe Gym is set for 3 p.m.
