No. 2/8 Sharks Take Down Chaminade 85-51

HONOLULU –  No. 2/8 Hawai'i Pacific University got 12 first quarter points from All-American Amy Baum to roll to a wire-to-wire 85-51 PacWest Conference victory and run its winning streak to 32 games on Friday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium.
 
The Sharks (7-0, 6-0), ranked second in the D2SIDA Women's Poll and eighth in the WBCA Division II Poll, collected a 21-7 lead after the first quarter over the Silverswords (0-4, 0-4) never worried about the contests outcome again.
 
HPU got double-doubles from three players, led by senior Olivia West of Launceton, Australia/Templestowe with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Baum, from Melbourne, Australia/Rowville Secondary, tallied 20 points and 12 assists to go with five steals. Senior Alysha Marcucci of Yarragon, Australia/Marist-Sion, racked up her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Avery Cargill of Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman added 12 points, while junior Ally Bates of Melbourne, Australia/Yarra Valley grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds with four points.
 
Chaminade was paced by the duo of Lile Hina Oyama and Emma Morris who each scored 14 points. Jordyn Zader chipped in 11. Carsen Bridges came off the bench with seven rebounds and eight points.
 
HPU shot 44 percent from the field (31-of-71), including 12-of-33 3-point field goals (36 percent). The Sharks made 11-of-15 free throws (73 percent). Chaminade was held to just 26 percent from the floor (15-of-57), and 6-of-22 (27 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Swords hit 15-of-21 (71 percent) from the foul line. HPU crushed the Silverswords on the boards 54-33, and turned the ball 16 times to CUH's 20.
 
Baum scored the first seven points of the game for HPU on her way to the 12-point quarter as the Sharks jumped out to an early 12-3 lead. Then West followed suit in scoring nine points in the opening quarter as HPU led 21-7 and never looked back.
 
HPU led 37-18 at the half and expanded the advantage to 58-33 after three quarters.
 
The Sharks continued to score at will, taking the final period 27-18 on the way to the 85-51 victory.
 
The Sharks and Swords continue the NBA-style cross town rivalry Saturday at noon. The teams play for the third time in five days when they meet at McCabe Gym.
