HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University used a 14-0 run to overcome an eight-point second half deficit on the way to beating cross-town rival Chaminade 74-71 in PacWest Conference play on Monday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (3-8, 3-8) handed the Silverswords (3-6, 3-6) their fifth straight loss with HPU's third straight victory over CUH.
Senior
Tavon Tarpley of McLean, Va./Langley led the Sharks with a career night. Tarpley came off the bench to score 24 points, hitting 9-of-10 shots from the floor, and grab 12 rebounds to set new career-highs for the fifth-year senior. Sophmore
Lachlan Viney of Melbourne, Australia/Mazenod added 15 points with seven assists and sophomore
Colton Martin of Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound posted 11 points. Senior
Chidozie Ndu of Lagos, Nigeria/Sunrise Christian Academy (Kan.) just missed a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Silverswords were paced by Malik Parsons with 15 points and three steals, while Kevin Kremer scored 14 points with three swipes. Jessiya Villa added 12 points with three assists, and Isaac Amaral-Artharee collected 10 points with a team-high eight rebounds and three assists.
For the third time this season, HPU kept CUH at bay by defending the 3-point arc. Despite the Silverswords shooting 46 percent (15-of-33) from the floor, Chaminade was held to 3-of-26 (12 percent) from the arc. The Swords entered the game averaging 10.4 treys a contest. CUH also made just 8-of-15 (53 percent) of its free throws.
The Sharks shot 43 percent from the floor (15-of-35) and 4-of-18 (22 percent) from the 3-line. HPU hit 8-of-13 (62 percent) from the charity stripe. Chaminade outrebounded HPU 35-34, and turned the ball over 15 times to the Sharks 18.
The game swung in the second half as the Silverswords built an eight-point lead after holding a 3-point 35-32 lead at intermission. When CUH's DeRay Seamster hit the first of two free throws with 14:21 to play the Swords led 48-40.
But the Sharks answered the next time down the floor, Tarpley buried a mid-range jumper to key a 14-0 run. When Viney completed a traditional layup-free throw 3-point play to cap the run and put the Sharks up 54-48 with 9:39 remaining.
Chaminade inched back to within three-points, a few times in the next four minutes, but the Sharks wouldn't allow the Swords the advantage. With four minutes remaining the Sharks had one more mini-run left, posting a 6-0 swing capped by Tarpley making both ends of a 1-and-1 to give HPU a 71-61 lead with 1:55 to play.
Villa ended the run with a layup to start an eight-point run for the Swords to pull to 71-69 with eight seconds left. Needing to foul the Swords sent Viney to the line two times in the final seconds. Viney made three-of-the-four shots. HPU allowed a Villa layup, but not a final 3-point attempt to hang on to a 74-71 win.
The Sharks play their final game of the season on Wednesday by hosting the Swords one more time. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
