HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University took the first set, but Hawai'i Hilo fought back the HPU attack to claim a four-set victory in the final game of the first day PacWest Hawai'i Tournament #1 on Saturday night at The Shark Tank.
The Sharks (1-1, 1-1) fell to the Vulcans (2-0, 2-0) 26-24, 23-25, 15-25, 19-25.
The Sharks hit .150 against the Vulcans and had 10.0 team blocks, but UHH posted a .200 hitting percentage to go with its 6.0 team blocks.
The Sharks were led again by senior
Cameryn Collie of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge, with 14 kills. Freshman
Sunny Brown of Draper, Utah/Alta added six kills and five blocks, and junior
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah, recorded six kills with two blocks.
The Vulcans were paced by the play of Bria Beale who double-doubled with 18 kills and 20 digs, while Samara Cruz tallied 15 kills.
HPU overcame a 20-14 deficit in the first set against UH Hilo, started by a kill by senior setter
Casey Davenport of Auburn, Wash./Mountainview, then a solo block from junior
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union. HPU lost the next point, the rattled off the next four to pull within one a 21-20 on a Ferris kill.
The Sharks fell behind 23-20 to the Vulcans, then got an ace from freshman
Makayla Warthan of Modesto, Calif./Beyer that started a 6-1 run that was capped by a kill from Collie to win the first set 26-24.
In the second set, HPU again got to a one-point deficit at 24-23, but a service error to potentially tie the set went awry and the Sharks fell 25-23.
The Vulcans dominated the third set 25-15, then closed out HPU with a 25-19 set to end the match.
The Sharks and Vulcans play again on Sunday at 1 p.m., then finish the tournament against Chaminade at 7 p.m. in what is essentially the Sharks senior night.
