Chaminade Sweeps Softball Sharks on Friday

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped a doubleheader to cross-town rival Chaminade 8-0 (6 innings) and 4-3 (10 innings) on Friday afternoon at Howard Okita Field.

The Sharks (0-5, 0-5) remained winless on the season, while the Silverswords (4-4, 4-4) climbed back to the .500 mark with the wins. The contests, home games for Chaminade, were played at Okita Field as the only field available.

HPU was shut out in the first game as CUH's Madi Stockslager (3-3) held the Sharks to just three hits in the 8-0 triumph in six innings. Stockslager struck out seven Sharks in six innings of work, without allowing a walk.

Junior lefthander Megan Wilson of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch (0-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

The Sharks took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game, but two costly errors allowed the Swords to tie the contest. Then the Swords scored in the bottom of the 10th for the win.

HPU junior righthander Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista had a strong outing in the circle and at the plate to take the hard-luck loss. Torres (0-3) went the distance allowing four runs, only one earned, on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Torres was also 1-for-4 at the plate with a 2-RBI double.

Junior catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado, went 2-for-4 in the second game at the plate, while covid freshman Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai 'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama was 2-for-6 on the day with an RBI in the second contest.

Chaminade's Taylor Genera (1-1) got the win, going all 10 innings allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and four strike outs.

The Sharks got all of their runs in the second inning after Dungey doubled and Ashley Iseri walked, Torres brought them home with a 2-RBI double. The Aina followed with an RBI single to plate Torres for the 3-0 lead.

That held until the Chaminade fifth, when a single and an error set up an RBI single by Kobe Brown, followed by an RBI double from Malia Moisa for a 3-2 HPU advantage.

The bottom of the seventh set the stage for the Swords. After a leadoff single, HPU committed errors on consecutive plays to allow Keaolani Takemura to tie the score at 3-3. Torres got the Sharks out of the inning to send the contest to extra frames.

The game stayed knotted at 3-all entering the 10th, allowing each team to start the inning with a runner at second. The Sharks had a runner thrown out at the plate and didn't score in their half of the 10th. The Swords followed by sacrificing their leadoff runner to third, then winning the game on a single by Genera over a shallow playing outfield for the 4-3 victory.

The Sharks and Swords play another doubleheader on Saturday at Howard Okita Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
