KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped a doubleheader to Hawai'i Hilo 5-0 and 10-7 on Saturday at
Howard Okita Field.
The Sharks (0-9, 0-9) battled back to tie the second game against the undefeated Vulcans (7-0, 7-0) at 5-5 in the fourth, only to have UH Hilo roar back to take the sweep.
The Vulcans started out strong in game one scoring a single run in the opening frame and a pair of runs in the second. They added two additional making to 5-0 in the sixth.
HPU's junior pitcher
Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte led off the sixth with double straight down the right line but could not be brought in to break the shutout.
UHH's Vevesi Li'ili'i tallied two doubles with an RBI and Kiarra Lincoln went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Torres (0-4) suffered the loss pitching all seven innings allowing five earned runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts.
UHH starter Valerie Alvarado (3-0) picked up the win and her second shutout of the season allowing four hits with three strikeouts.
Game two started much the same for Hilo scoring four runs in the opening frame on two walks and three hits with an HPU fielding error. They added another one in the top of the third making it 5-0.
In the third inning, the Sharks tallied their first run of the day started by two walks. Sophomore Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawia'i/Pearl City lasered one to first base and passed the infielder to scored freshman
Hoku Ching of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Roosevelt. Another walk loaded the bases for sophomore
Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua who reached on an error to score another run for HPU. Freshman
Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll cranked a two RBI double over the left fielder to bring the Sharks within one. Yet another walk loaded the bases and Leong's tying run was scored on a fielder's choice.
UH Hilo took back its lead in the fourth with a single run and added four more to it in the fifth making it 10-5.
The Sharks had one final drive in the bottom of the seventh. Two back-to-back singles set up a two RBI triple from freshman
Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kaplama. They couldn't get Aina back home and ended the game at 10-7.
Junior lefthander
Megan Wilson (0-3) of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch pitched all seven frames allowing 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits with six walks in taking the loss.
The Vulcans Sara Bhatt pitched two innings allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks. Her relief pitcher, Leah Gonzales, picked up her first win on the year throwing for the last five innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk.
The Sharks are back at it again with Hawai'i Hilo tomorrow afternoon at
Howard Okita Field for an Easter Sunday Showdown. First pitch is set for noon.
