Swords Slice Sharks In Twinbill

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University was swept a PacWest Conference Hawai'i doubleheader by cross-town rival Chaminade Saturday afternoon falling 6-5 in eight innings and 2-0 at Sand Island Field.

The Sharks (6-13, 6-13) battled back from a 4-3 deficit to tie the Silverswords (12-10, 12-10) in the first game before falling in the extra inning, but was shutout in the nightcap.

Freshman Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the first game, while senior catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado bashed a two-run homer.

Junior righthander Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (5-6) suffered the extra-innings complete game loss, allowing six runs, three earned, on 10 hits with five walks and a strikeout in 7.2 innings. Senior lefthander Megan Wilson (1-7) of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch drew the complete game loss in the second game, allowing just two runs on six hits with three walks in six innings.

HPU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game, scoring once in the first on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Kanoe, Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll, and twice more in the third on Dungey's two-run blast to centerfield, her first of the season.

The Swords answered with four runs in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded RBI walk, a passed ball and a two RBI single to claim a 4-3 lead.

HPU answered in the fifth, after freshman Cherise Horita of Aiea, Hawai'i/Kalani walked and stole second before Tanigawa slapped an RBI single to left to knot the contest at 4-4.

It stayed there until the eighth, when HPU took the lead after Aina ripped a triple down the right field line and sophomore Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City lofted a sacrifice fly to score her to make it 5-4.

Things didn't bode well in the bottom of the eighth for the Sharks. After a dropped foul fly gave CUH's Jaeda Cabunoc a second chance, Cabunoc singled to right, followed by another Sword single and a sac bunt. Pitcher Madelyn Stockslager tied the game with an RBI single, Taylor Genera smacked a bases-loaded RBI single into center for the walk off 6-5 win.

Stockslager (6-7) got the complete game win allowing five runs on nine hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Wilson and CUH's Genera, as Wilson scattered four hits and Genera one. The Sharks got their second hit in the fifth, but the game remained 0-0 entering the bottom of the fifth. CUH led off the inning with a walk and a double that sent the runner to third. The Swords scored on a wild pitch, then added an RBI single by Cheyne Obara for the games only runs.

HPU threatened in the top of the second with a pair of singles, but a ground out and a pop out ended stranded the two runners and gave Chaminade the 2-0 win.

Genera (6-2) had the complete game shutout, allowing four hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The teams meet for the final time in 2021 on Sunday again at Sand Island Park. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for high noon.
