WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University saw its two-match win streak come to an end on Friday night as Western Washington defeated HPU 2-0 in non-conference play at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Sharks (2-3) allowed a pair of first half goals to the Vikings (2-4) who won their second straight on the island.
Western Washington's Alessandro Tomasi collected the first goal in the 32nd minute with a sharp, one-time blast past the Sharks keeper after Drew Farnsworth chested a pass from Teagen Eldridge and bumped it to Tomasi for the 1-0 lead.
Just before the half, the Vikings lit the scoreboard again when Jacob Sundberg found a wide-open John Espinoza who scored from straight on to give WWU a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute.
The two goals were the only shots on goal by the Vikings, who attempted 11 for the game. HPU sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Margo of Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth played the entire contest, picking up his first decision of the season.
HPU, who managed just three shots in the first half, peppered nine attempts against Viking goalkeeper Brandon Wolter who recorded five saves, all in the second half.
The Sharks close non-conference play on Monday when they host No. 17 Seattle Pacific. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
