FRESNO, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University fought Fresno Pacific for five sets on Wednesday night, but it was FPU that came out on top with a 3-2 PacWest Conference win at the FPU Special Events Center.
The Sharks (2-10, 1-3) fell to the Sunbirds (4-10, 1-3) 11-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15 in the two hour, eight minute match. The contest was the second in a four-match Northern California road trip.
The Sharks hit .190 for the match, with 6.0 team blocks. The Sunbirds hit .288 for the five sets, with 9.0 team blocks.
HPU was led by a pair of double-doubles, as freshman
Karina Gatewood of Cerritos, Calif./Cypress and sophomore
Ella Dotson of Tucson, Ariz./Marana each posted 15 kills with Gatewood adding 15 digs and Dotson 14 digs. Junior
Demi Winters of Gresham, Ore./Barlow tallied four blocks.
FPU got a 24 kill, 24 dig performance from Corinne Acosta to lead the Sunbirds. Lauren Wamsley chalked up 17 kills with a .361 hitting percentage, while Makena Ogas had 10 kills with five blocks. Chloe Melis added four blocks.
