HPU Falls To Academy of Art 83-70

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University saw Academy of Art go on an 11-3 run late in the second half as ART U grabbed an 83-70 PacWest Conference win on Saturday night at The Shark Tank.
 
The Sharks (3-11, 0-7) closed a homestand with the loss, while the Urban Knights (10-6, 6-2) picked up their second win in three games.
 
HPU was led by senior Rodney Hounshell of Richmond, Va./West Linn (Ore.) who led all scorers with 21 points. Junior Trey Miller of Mukilteo, Wash./Archbishop Murray just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds off the bench, while freshman Max Topham of Paragonah, Utah/Real Salt Lake Academy turned in eight points and 10 rebounds.
 
ART U was paced by Klay Brown with 16 points and seven rebounds and eight assists with two blocks. Joshua Bagley scored 13 points  with three steals, while Mike Asante added 10 points with five rebounds. Deang Deang chipped in 11 points for the Urban Knights.
 
HPU shot 38 percent from the field (23-of-60), including 6-of-27 (22 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU shot 64 percent from the foul line (18-of-28). ART U shot 37 percent from the floor (24-of-65), with 7-of-27 (26 percent) coming from the arc. The Urban Knights capitalized on 28-of-38 (74 percent) from the charity stripe. HPU outrebounded ART U 51-40, but suffered a season-high 29 turnovers to the Urban Knights' 16.
 
The Sharks fell behind 8-0 to start the game, but came back with an 11-2 run to take the lead midway through the open half. After allowing a score HPU followed with another 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from redshirt freshman Jackson Young of Kerrville, Texas/Tivy for an 18-11 lead with 10:05 remaining in the half.
 
The Urban Knights used a run to grab a brief lead before HPU responded with its own run to claim its last lead at 31-30 with 3:05 left in the half. But it was ART U's Brown who buried a 3-pointer on the next possession to start and 11-0 run for a 10 point lead. The Sharks got a Miller followup in the final minute to give the Urban Knights a 42-34 halftime lead.
 
The Sharks saw ART U get back up by 12 before chipping away at the lead, then getting a 10-4 run to close the contest to 55-53 with 10:36 remaining on a layup from freshman Bodi Nageli of Herriman, Utah/Herriman.
 
HPU held tight for the next few minutes, but the Urban Knights pushed the lead up to 13 points and never looked back.
 
The Sharks leave the state for their next game, traveling to southern California to face Point Loma next Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. HST (4 p.m. PST) at Golden Gym.
