Short Handed Sharks fall to ART U

HONOLULU – Academy of Art's Chanel Stuart scored a school record 42 points against a short-handed Hawai'i Pacific University squad on Saturday to lead ART U to an 82-59 PacWest Conference victory at The Shark Tank.
 
The Sharks (4-8, 1-4) had only eight available student-athletes to take on the Urban Knights (8-6, 5-2), including one playing her first contest of the season and another seeing her first extensive playing time.
 
The Urban Knights opened the game with a 13-2 run as part of the 33-7 first quarter and never trailed in the contest.
 
HPU was led by junior Avery Cargill of Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman who scored 19 points, with freshman Kayli Klemp of Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Mesa scoring a season-best 12 points. Freshman Jordyn Jensen of Truckee, Calif./Bishop Manogue just missed a double-double adding 11 points with nine rebounds.
 
In addition to Stuart's 42 points, Brooke Rodgers double-doubled scored 10 points with 10 rebounds to go with five steals, and Milan Tuttle also scored 10 points with two blocks.
 
The Sharks shot 26 percent (15-of-57) from the floor, including 6-of-18 (33 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU made 23-of-31 from the foul line (74 percent). ART U made 27-of-66 (41 percent) of its shots from the field, hitting 12-of-30 (40 percent) from the arc. The Urban Knights hit 64 percent (16-of-25) from the charity stripe. ART U won the battle of the boards 46-43, and turned the ball over 14 times to the Sharks 18.
 
The Sharks got behind the eight-ball in the first 10 minutes of the game, but came back to outscore ART U 52-49 over the last three quarters.
 
The Sharks go on the road for the first time in PacWest play for their next contest, traveling to southern California to face Point Loma next Saturday. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. HST (2 p.m. PST).
