SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University played hard but it wasn't enough as Point Loma claimed an 84-65 PacWest Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Golden Gymnasium.
The Sharks (4-9, 1-5) held a lead early before the Sea Lions (9-7, 4-5) used a 15-3 run at the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to take control of the contest.
The Sharks were paced by the play of junior Tavia Rowell of Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove, who posted 20 points with three steals, while graduate student Julia Razo of Woodland, Calif./St. Francis added 14 points with four swipes and freshman Jordyn Jensen of Truckee, Calif./Bishop Manogue chipped in 10 points and led the squad with five rebounds.
The Sea Lions got 21 points from Ellie Turk, while Cara Liggins double-doubled with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Madison Corder collected 14 points and Annika Thayer just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 boards.
The Sharks shot 32 percent (19-of-60) from the floor, including 5-of-25 (20 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU made 22-of-31 from the foul line (71 percent). Point Loma nailed 55 percent from the field (31-of-56), including 5-of-15 (33 percent) from the arc. The Sea Lions hit 17-of-24 (71 percent) from the charity stripe. PLNU dominated the boards 51-24, while HPU suffered just 10 turnovers to the Sea Lions 21.
HPU led early and traded the lead with the Sea Lions. PLNU led by one at 19-18 after a Rowell 3-pointer with a minute to play in the opening quarter before the Sea Lions connected a pair of scores to lead 23-18 at the break and started the 15-3 run that ran into the second period. That run gave PLNU a double-digit lead it would never relinquish.
The Sharks are back in action again on Monday when they meet Biola in a 3:30 p.m. HST (5:30 p.m. PST) contest at Chase Gymnasium.
