Sharks Win Second in a Row, 3-1 Over Dominican

HONOLULU – Hawaii Pacific University volleyball hosted Dominican University of California for a conference contest, Thursday night in the Shark Tank. The Sharks dominated as they took their second straight victory in a 3-1 set score.

The Sharks (2-14, 2-8 Pacwest) win their second consecutive contest, while the Penguins (0-19, 0-11) remain winless on their season.

HPU came out firing in the first set as they went up 5-0, forcing the Penguins to call a timeout. The timeout seemed to work as neither team could find consecutive points before the Sharks pulled out for a large run which helped them to take the first set 25-12.

The Penguins did not let the first set phase them as they grabbed an early 10-7 lead to start the second set. The Sharks just could not find the run to get them back in the set as Dominican University held out for a 25-19 set victory, evening the set count 1-1.

Set three saw HPU return back to set one form as they shot out to an early 12-5 lead. After a timeout, the Sharks continued to pound the ball, outscoring the Penguins 13-6 to win the set 25-11.

Like set four, it seemed like Dominican found their rhythm again as they kept the set fairly close. However, Hawaii Pacific University showed more resistance as they held onto a 14-8 lead in the set. From there, HPU outscored the Penguins 6-1, solidifying their lead. The two teams exchanged the final 10 points, scoring five each. The Sharks closed the door as senior middle Demi Winters slammed the ball, earning HPU their second straight victory.

Winters was a wall at the net, leading the team in total blocks with four. Sophomore setter Pua Beazley led the Sharks with 19 assists, while graduate setter Maile Powell followed right behind with 16. Graduate outsider Riley Gill led with 18 receptions while freshman Violet Sickles led in the dig category, with 10.

HPU held DOM to a .040 hitting percentage and out-aced the Penguins 9-1.

Hawaii Pacific University is back at it tomorrow as they will be hosting Holy Names University in the Shark Tank, with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
