Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sharks Unable to Pull out Senior Night Victory, falling to the Sunbirds, 4-1

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team hosted Fresno Pacific University Friday afternoon at the Waipi'o Soccer Complex for senior night. A tough second half saw the Sharks fall to the Sunbirds, 4-1.

The Sharks stand at a (3-5-3, 2-2-1 Pacwest) record while the Sunbirds improve to a (7-5-2, 4-3-0 Pacwest) record.

There was not much attacking activity throughout the first nine minutes of the game, as neither team tallied a shot. The Sunbirds broke the cold spree by taking two shots, one in the tenth and one in the eleventh minute, none of which found the back of the net. The Sharks had a great opportunity in the 22nd minute, as freshman Justice Valdez found a breakaway, but the shot went a little wide on the left side of the goal.

The final ten minutes is what changed the first half for HPU as sophomore Marcella Chan fought for the ball, 25 feet from the net. Eventually the ball popped out loose, and junior Mehana Ortiz was in the right place, at the right time. Ortiz took the ball, dribbled left, before slotting a shot into the bottom right side of the net, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. They held onto this lead, entering halftime.

It was a much different second half for the Sunbirds as they scored two goals in the 48th minute, giving them a 2-1 lead. Eleven minutes later would see a third goal be put away by FPU. The Sharks had some attempts, including a possession with three consecutive shots, unfortunately, no goal would be scored. The Sunbirds sealed the game with a final goal in the 83rd minute, as the Sharks fell 4-1.

Ortiz scored her second goal of the year, while Chan earned her second assist of the year. Graduate goalie Sophia Garrido added four saves to her season total.

The Sharks celebrated nine seniors: Brittny Ihara, Jacey Iwane, Hunter Malaki, Kate Searle, Megumi Miyataki, Alyssa Gabriel, Kayli Ann Yoshioka, Katie Pothier, and Kaylee Sumida were all recognized for their on-and-off the field leadership and efforts.

The Sharks will finish the season on the road with five straight games. The first will take place in Irvine, California against Concordia University Irvine on Monday, October 24, at Eagles Field. That game is set to start at 12:30 p.m. HST.
