HONOLULU – The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team hosted Biola University Thursday night for a Pacwest conference matchup in the Shark Tank. HPU was unable to stop BU as they fell 3-0.
The Sharks (2-18, 2-12 Pacwest) will play their final home game on Saturday, while the Eagles (14-9, 11-5 Pacwest) will conclude their road trip in Hilo.
The two teams battled out the first 18 points of the first set, with Biola leading 11-7. The Eagles started to take over as they extended their lead to 17-11, before going on a 8-0 run to close out the set, 25-11.
Set two saw the Sharks make an interesting change in the lineup as graduate outside hitter Riley Gill made the switch to libero. The change had an immediate effect for HPU as they took an early 9-5 lead. Biola then tied the game up at 11 all before the two teams would battle back-and-forth until the scoreline was 20-19, in favor of the Eagles. HPU went back up 22-21, however, BU closed out the second set with a 4-0 run.
With the Eagles up two sets, they entered the third set wanting to close the game out immediately. Before the Sharks knew it, the game had spiraled out of their control as they fell into a 17-5 deficit. Although HPU would outscore the Eagles 8-7 to end the set, the third set went the way of Biola, as they took the game 3-0.
Senior middle blocker Demi Winters led the Sharks in kills with eight. Sophomore setter Pua Beazley had 14 assists, while freshman setter Morgan Bodde was right behind her with eight. Gill, in the libero position, dug up a team leading ten balls.
The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team has one final home game this season, as they host Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, October 29. The Sharks will be celebrating senior night, with first serve set for 5:00 p.m. in the Shark Tank.
