Sharks Fall in Straight Sets to Hawks

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team traveled to Oakland, California, to take on Holy Names University Thursday night. HPU fell to HNU 3-0.

The Sharks (2-23, 2-17 PacWest) play their final game in a couple of days, while the Hawks (14-15, 9-11 PacWest) concluded their season today.

Holy Names scored four of the first five points of set one. However, Hawaii Pacific responded with a 3-1 run to bring their deficit down to one. Both teams then exchanged 3-0 runs to keep the battle fierce. But that was how close it got, as the Hawks outscored the Sharks 11-1 to take a commanding 19-8 lead. HNU closed the first set, winning 25-13.

The second set saw an early explosion from the side of Holy Names, jumping ahead of the Sharks 9-2. HPU did close the gap by five points, but would not be able to fully recover, as set two went to the Hawks, 25-15.

Hawaii Pacific may have conceded the first point of the third set, but they claimed the next five, to take a 5-1 lead. The Hawks broke HPU's hot streak with an 11-0 run, putting them in the driver's seat. On multiple occasions, the Sharks attempted to get back into the set. But, the firepower from Holy Names was too much, as set three, and the game, went to HNU, 25-15.

Junior outside hitter Ella Dotson led the Sharks in kills with four, while freshman middle blocker Marley Sandoval and graduate outside hitter Riley Gill each had three. Sophomore Pua Beazley led HPU with eight assists, she was also tied with sophomore defensive specialist Kohana Fukuchi in team leading digs at ten.

The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team has one more game in the season. They will be heading to Belmont, California, to take on the Academy of Art University inside Gleason Gym. The season finale is in a couple of days on Saturday, November 12, with first serve set for noon HT.
