Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Seawolves Best Sharks in the Shark Tank, 79-70

HONOLULU- The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team hosted the University of Alaska Anchorage for a regular season matchup Sunday afternoon in the Shark Tank.

The Sharks (0-3) lost another close contest, while the Sea Wolves (2-0) faceoff against Chaminade University tomorrow to conclude their trip to Hawaii.

It was a cold start for Hawaii Pacific in the first quarter, not finding a single point until the 7:00 mark, when graduate Ashley Nunez knocked down a three from the corner. The three-point shot was HPU's go to, as three different players hit one each. But, an 8-2 run for the Seawolves in the final two and a half minutes, put them ahead 23-16 at the end of the first.

Anchorage held a 28-19 lead early in the second quarter before the Sharks erupted on a 14-2 run, putting them in the lead 33-30 with 2:49 on the clock. Just like the first quarter, the Seawolves went on a 8-2 run to finish up the half, taking a 38-35 lead into the locker.

Junior Kalina Obrey started the scoring for both teams in the second half with a layup. Both teams continued to trade baskets, all the way into the fourth quarter, where the Sharks only trailed 64-62, with a little less than five minutes to go. However, in a span of two and half minutes, Anchorage went on a 12-0 run, closing the door on Hawaii Pacific as HPU fell to UAA 79-70.

Graduate Abby Spurgin completed her first double-double of the regular season, leading the team with 27 points and ten rebounds. Sophomore Claudia Diez Marti had 11 points to go with her three assists, while Obrey had ten points and eight rebounds.

The Sharks have a couple of weeks off before they play their next game against Chaminade University. That game will be taking place inside the Shark Tank on Tuesday, November 29, around 4:30 p.m. HT.
