Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pavez Scores Game Winning Goal in 87th Minute, Sharks Beat Silverswords 2-1.

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer played their final regular season matchup Saturday afternoon against Chaminade University at Saint Louis Field. A pair of goals from Sebastian Pavez pushed HPU to a 2-1 victory over CUH.

The Sharks (8-6-2, 6-4-0 PacWest) finished the regular season fifth in the PacWest, while the Silverswords (2-10-2, 2-7-1 PacWest) finished ninth.

The first half saw little to no attacking pressure from either team in the first 39 minutes of the game. In the 40th minute, sophomore Gabriel Stauring shot the ball towards the Silversword net, the ball went past the goalie but was saved by a CUH defensive player. The pressure was still on, as graduate Dominic Toone fought for the ball, which broke loose and rolled to the feet of fellow graduate Sebastian Pavez. Pavez then used a Chaminade defender to obscure the goalie's vision, and shot the ball off of his left foot into the left side of the net. The Sharks led the Silverswords 1-0 going into halftime.

It did not take too long before the Silverswords tied the game up at one goal a piece, as Chaminade capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity in the 50th minute. As time continued to dwindle, neither team could find a second goal to put them ahead.

However, the Sharks did not feel like playing extra minutes. In the 88th minute, junior Leandro Weingartner crossed the ball across the net, right into the waiting arms, or head in this case, of Pavez, who headed the ball for his second goal of the game, giving the Sharks a 2-1 lead. With only a minute and a half left, HPU did not allow CUH to take a game-tying shot, as they held on for a 2-1 victory.

Pavez scored his first two goals of the season, while Toone (6) and Weingartner (2) each added an assist. Graduate goalie Jeremy Zielinski added two saves to his season total.

The Sharks finish the regular season fifth in the PacWest with a record of (8-6-2, 6-4-0 PacWest).
