Valdez Scores a Pair, Sharks Win Season Finale 2-0 over Silverswords

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's soccer team competed in their final game and conference matchup of the regular season. They did not have to travel far for this one, as they took on Chaminade University at Saint Louis Field, Saturday afternoon.  A couple of passing plays led to a pair of goals, giving HPU the season finale win 2-0 over CUH.

The Sharks (5-8-3, 4-5-1 PacWest)
close their season with a victory, while the Silverswords (7-6-3, 4-3-3 PacWest) drop their second straight game.

Graduate Megumi Miyataki had the first attacking opportunity of the game for both teams as her shot in the fifth minute was saved away. From there, graduate goalie Sophia Garrido would be tested throughout a four minute period, where three shots from the Silverswords would be fired, but to no avail, as she saved all of them.

The Sharks, looking for another chance, found one in the 21st minute. A corner kick was sent across the box, senior Kaylee Sumida knocked it down with her foot, before passing it out towards Miyataki, who sent the ball back into the middle of the box. Freshman Justice Valdez emerged from a crowd of people and slightly lofted the ball towards the net with her head. The Chaminade goalie could do nothing but stare as the ball floated out of her reach, and into the back of the goal.

Not done yet, in the 41st minute, sophomore Marcella Chan sent a long pass from HPU's defensive half, all the way into the box. Valdez found the ball, before putting away her second goal of the game, putting the Sharks up 2-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Sharks shifted into a more defensive stance, not attempting a single shot the entire half. The Silverswords best chance to narrow the score came in the 69th minute, taking two shots in a span of nine seconds, however the first shot was blocked by a HPU defender, while the second was saved by Garrido. All in all, the Sharks faced 11 shots in the second half, but they held on for a 2-0 victory.

Valdez scored her third and fourth goal of the season, as she takes the top spot in goal scoring for the Sharks this year. Chan assisted on her team high third goal, while Miyataki found her first assist. Finally, Garrido adds six saves to her season total of 44 saves, while earning her fifth clean sheet.

This concludes the 2022 season for the Hawaii Pacific University Women's soccer team. They finish the season with a two game win streak and a record of (5–8-3, 4-5-1 PacWest).
