Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

HPU Falls to Sunbirds, 3-0

FRESNO, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team traveled to California to begin their final four games of the season. First stop was Fresno Pacific University at the FPU Special Events Center Monday night. Good starts to sets one and three, were not enough to earn HPU a set, as they fell 3-0.

The Sharks (2-21, 2-15 Pacwest) will go up against the Penguins in their next match, while the Sunbirds (15-8, 14-4 Pacwest) will host two more Hawaii teams.

The first set was back-and-forth as FPU took two separate leads of four points. However the fighting spirit of the Sharks kept them in it, tying the game up both times. The score was 16-15 in favor of Fresno when the Sunbirds grabbed control of the first set. HPU was outscored 9-4 in the final 13 points, falling behind 1-0.

It was a much tougher second set for the Sharks as they quickly found themselves down 10-3. HPU fought back, but the closest they would get to the Sunbirds was five points, as set two went the way of FPU, 25-12.

The Sharks started to turn it around, taking hold of the lead multiple times in the early stages of the third set. The game was tied 10-10, before FPU bursted out for a 15-6 run to close out the game, 3-0.

Junior middle blocker Lachelle Sikes and graduate outside hitter Riley Gill led the Sharks with six kills in the match. Sophomore setter Pua Beazley had 12 assists, while graduate setter Maile Powell had ten. Gill and senior defensive specialist Makenzie Fa'amusili-Cacoulidis, led the team in digs with seven and six respectively. Meanwhile, freshman middle blocker Morghn Monahan stood tall for two total blocks.

The Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team will now head to San Rafael, California,  to take on the Dominican University of California, a team they bested earlier this season. This game will take place on Wednesday, November 9 at Conlan Center, with first serve at 4:00 p.m. HT.
