Hope's Three-Point Shooting Leads Royals over Sharks

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team competed in a non-conference game against Hope International University Monday afternoon inside the Shark Tank. Dominant three-point shooting for HIU overwhelmed HPU, as they fell 72-47.

The Sharks (4-5, 3-0 PacWest) will play again in ten days, while the Royals (12-2, 5-1 GSAC) wrapped up their Hawaii trip 2-0 against PacWest teams.

It was a slow start for Hawaii Pacific, falling behind 7-2 in the first four minutes, with only a couple of free-throws to their name. Senior Avery Cargill sank a three-pointer for HPU's first basket of the game, but Royals' player Ana Resendiz responded with back-to-back threes of her own. Despite that, the Sharks finished the first quarter on a 8-3 run, narrowing their deficit to three points, 16-13.

The second quarter is when it started to get out of hand. After keeping the scoreline close at 28-22, the Royals would go on to outscore the Sharks 14-2. The first half buzzer sounded with Hawaii Pacific trailing 42-24.

Although HPU scored the first four points of the second half, the closest they would get would be 20 points. When it was all said and done, the Royals had connected on 13 three-pointers, which was too much for the Sharks, as they were bested 72-47.

If there was a bright spot for HPU, it would be the fact that they converted on all 16 of their free-throw attempts.

Individually, Cargill finished with a team leading 14 points, junior Kalina Obrey followed right behind her with ten points.

Sophomore Jordyn Jensen scored nine points and hauled in a team leading eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, graduate Keona Loftis led the Sharks in passing, setting up two teammates.

The Sharks will be back in action in ten days, when they host the Champion Christian College Tigers for their final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. HT inside the Shark Tank on Thursday, December 29.
