HPU Controls Chaminade 74-63

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University used a 14-4 run in the final four minutes of the first quarter to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish to beat cross-town rival Chaminade 74-63 in PacWest Conference action Friday night at McCabe Gym.

The Sharks (5-14, 2-10) snapped a 12-game losing streak with the victory, while the Silverswords (1-16, 0-13) dropped their 16th straight.

The Sharks starting five all scored in double-figures, led by freshman Allison Ross of Boise, Idaho/Boise with her season-high 18 points. Graduate student Julia Razo of Woodland, Calif./St. Francis double-doubled with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Avery Cargill of Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman, and junior Tavia Rowell of Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove tallied 13 points each, with sophomore Haley Masaki of Honolulu/Kamehameha-Kapalama chipped in 11.

The Silverswords were led by Michaella Dean's double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Dallas Martinez added 12 points, with Arianna Blowe and Emma Morris each scoring 10.

The Sharks shot 46 percent from the floor (25-of-54), with 6-of-20 (30 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU hit 18-of-29 (62 percent) from the foul line. Chaminade shot 40 percent (29-of-72) from the field, but just 2-of-23 (nine percent) from behind the arc. The Swords made 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the charity stripe. HPU outrebounded CUH 39-34, but suffered 14 turnovers to the Swords 12.

The Swords and Sharks traded the lead early with CUH holding a 10-7 lead with 4:21 to play in the first quarter. Cargill started the Sharks with two free throws 15 seconds later, then added a pull-up jumper in the lane to start the 14-4 run over the quarter's final four minutes to give the Sharks the lead for good. HPU led 21-14 at the end of the first.

The Sharks opened up a double-digit lead during the second, the first on a Rowell jumper, but saw the Swords trim the lead back to seven at 32-25 at halftime.

HPU got the lead up to 12 in the third, only to have the Swords cut the advantage back to eight at 55-47 after three.

In the final frame, HPU got the lead back into double-digits, finishing with a Cargill free throw to take the 11-point win 74-63.

HPU is back in action on Sunday, hosting Fresno Pacific in a game rescheduled from Jan. 4. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
