KAILUA, Hawai'i – The No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific University women shut down Concordia (Calif.) 4-0 in action Saturday afternoon in the Hawai'I Invitational at the Kailua Racquet Club.
The Sharks (2-0) made quick work to secure the doubles point from the Eagles (2-1), then picked up three straight set wins to take the match.
In doubles play, the Sharks No. 1 duo of
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner zapped CUI's Heather Richards and Maya Arksey 6-1, and the No. 2 pair of
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara downed Tiffany Carrillo and Alyssa Zayat 6-2. The No. 3 spot of
Valentina Mokrova/
Marta Ruszczynska led 3-2 against Jennifer Jolin/Grace Gorges when the point was won.
In singles competition, Ruszczynska led the way with a quick win at No. 5 over the Eagles Alicia Da Re 6-2, 6-0, before Pipa took No. 1 by defeating 35th ranked Richards 6-2, 6-2. The Sharks clinched the match at No. 3 with Tilgner besting Arcey 6-2, 6-3. The Sharks were up at No. 2 with Busson leading Carrillo 6-0, 5-4, and at No. 4 with Mokrova taking the first set 7-6 against Zayat. The No. 6 spot had CUI's Jolin leading HPU's
Olivia Kjaer 6-2, 5-5 when the match was halted.
The Sharks have two matches on Sunday in the Hawai'i Invitational, facing No. 24 Biola at 9 a.m., then meeting Dominican (Calif.) at 3 p.m.
