KAILUA, Hawai'i – The No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific University women won two matches on Sunday in the Hawai'i Invitational, beating 24th ranked Biola 4-0 in the morning and then taking down Dominican (Calif.) 4-1 in the late afternoon.
The Sharks (4-0) claimed the doubles point and the top three singles positions in handing the Eagles (3-1) their first loss of the season. But HPU dropped the doubles point for the first time in the 2022 campaign against the Penguins (1-3) before winning the top four singles spots.
In the morning's match against No. 24 Biola, the Sharks
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara claimed the No. 2 doubles against Brook Fager and Alexandria Mann 6-2, with
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska winning No. 3 doubles minutes later over Lilly McNeill and Ines Diaz 6-2. The Sharks top duo of
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner had a lead on BU's 13th ranked pair of Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia 4-3 when the point was won.
HPU ripped through the top of singles against the Eagles, starting with Pipa stunning 13th ranked Emery 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1. Tilgner had the same 6-1, 6-0 score at No. 3 against McNeill, and the Sharks clinched the match when Busson defeated 42nd ranked Brascia 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2. In the three unfinished positions, Ruszczynska led Fager at No. 5 6-1, 3-3, with
Olivia Kjaer and BU's Gaby Carvajal knotted 2-6, 4-1 at No. 6. The Eagles Mann held a first set 7-6 lead on Mokrova and had not played in the second set when the match was halted.
Against Dominican, the Sharks got the win at No. 1 doubles with Pipa/Tilgner dispatching Audrey Rafols/Gina Dudley 6-2, but the Penguins answered with a win at No. 3 as
Rikona Murakami and Kjaer were beaten by Gigi Alajeely and Haley Garcia 6-3. The No. 2 doubles was just a few minutes behind as DUC won the point with Zoe Coggins and Julia Rydel besting Ruszczynska and Mokorova 6-2.
The Sharks roared back in singles, with Tilgner beating Garcia 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 to start things off. Pipa followed with a win at No. 1 over Rafols 6-2, 6-1, with Busson adding a win at No. 2 against Dudley 6-0, 6-2. Ruszczynska finished the match with a triumph at No. 4 against Alajeely 6-0, 6-4. Murakami was tied with Coggins 5-5 at No. 6 when play was halted, and DUC's Julia Rydel led Kjaer 6-3, 4-2.
The Sharks conclude the Hawai'i Invitational on Monday against Hawai'i Hilo at the Kailua Racquet Club with the first serve at 4 p.m. The HPU men, who did not play on Sunday, face the fourth ranked Vulcans Monday morning at 11 at the KRC.
