No. 9 Sharks Take Down Vulcans

KAILUA, Hawai'i – The No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific University women made it a sweep of their own Hawai'i Invitational with a 4-3 win over Hawai'i Hilo on Monday evening at the Kailua Racquet Club.
 
The Sharks (5-0) took the doubles point and the top three singles spots for the win before Vulcans (2-4) claimed the bottom of the singles lineup to make it close.
 
HPU made quick work of the doubles point, with the No. 2 duo of Elodie Busson and Mihoki Miyahara blanking Julia Barden and Nanami Okamoto 6-0, with the No. 1 pair of Shaline Pipa and Marleen Tilgner defeated Carolina Alfonsin and Hannah Highsmith 6-3. The No. 3 double went unfinished with Valentina Mokrova and Marta Ruszczynska leading Hikari Osaki and Akari Ichikawa 5-3 when pulled.
 
Busson got the singles off and running at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sandra Dafincescu, just ahead of Pipa at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Alfonsin. The Sharks won the match when Tilgner took No. 3 against Barden 6-2, 6-0.
 
That's when the Vulcans made their move to score in the competition. After HPU won first sets at next two positions, UHH claimed No. 5 as Osaki won in a super tiebreaker over Ruszczynska 7-6, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8). Then No. 4 went to Okamoto who downed Mokrova 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4), and finished with a straight sets win at No. 6 as Highsmith defeated Olivia Kjaer 7-6, 6-4.
 
The Sharks are in action again in 11 days when they take on first of three Division I opponents when the face Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Feb. 25. First serve at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex is slated for 10 a.m.
