BELMONT, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University fought to hold on, but Academy of Art used a 10-3 run in the final five minutes to win 66-59 in PacWest Conference action at Gleason Gym.
The Sharks (6-17, 3-13) lost for the third time in three days as the Urban Knights (13-9, 10-5) overcame a 13-point halftime deficit in the contest.
The Sharks were led by junior
Tavia Rowell of Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Graduate student
Julia Razo of Woodland, Calif./St. Francis posted 14 points with eight boards, while junior
Avery Cargill from Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman chipped in 13 points.
ART U got a double-double off the bench from Alisha Wilson with 22 points and 11 rebounds to go with four steals. Brooke Rodgers added 13 points and three swipes, and Kaila Murrell 10 points.
The Sharks shot 48 percent for the game (21-of-44), including 9-of-16 (56 percent) from the 3-point arc, but could only connect on 3-of-14 (21 percent) shots in the fourth quarter. HPU was 8-of-9 (89 percent) from the foul line. ART U hit 41 percent (30-of-73) from the floor, including 4-of-25 (16 percent) from the arc. The Urban Knights went 2-of-5 (40 percent) from the charity stripe. ART U outrebounded HPU 38-26 and turned the ball over just eight times to the Sharks 20.
HPU fell behind by four early before a Razo layup started a 10-0 run to grab a six-point advantage at 14-8 on a Rowell fast-break 3 with 4:51 left in the quarter. The Urban Knights countered as the teams swapped scores with ART U cutting the lead to two before freshman
Allison Ross of Boise, Idaho/Boise buried a triple to send the Sharks to a 21-16 lead after one.
HPU used a 7-0 run early in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead on a Razo trey midway through the quarter. ART U trimmed it back to a six-point deficit, but HPU responded with a 9-2 run as Razo hit one trey and Cargill nailed two 3's to give the Sharks a 39-26 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was the boost for the Urban Knights. After HPU and ART U exchanged scores through the midway point of the quarter, the Urban Knights got an 8-0 run that cut the Sharks lead to one, only to have HPU chip back to hold a 48-46 advantage at the quarter break.
The Urban Knights made a 5-0 run to retake the lead to open the fourth quarter, but Razo hit a 3 to knot the game. The teams swapped scores and the lead. ART U had its two-point lead cut to one with at 60-59 on a layup by Rowell with 1:57 to play. But it was the last score for the Sharks. The Urban Knights followed with a 3-pointer from Murrell that keyed a 6-0 run to end the game and give ART U the 65-59 win.
The Sharks get a needed day off on Friday after three straight games before facing Holy Names in the first of back-to-back contests on Saturday and Sunday. Tipoff is at 11 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PST) both days at Tobin Gym in Oakland.
