OAKLAND, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University closed a double-digit deficit to one point with five minutes to play, but Holy Names responded to pull out an 80-71 PacWest Conference win on Sunday afternoon at Tobin Gym.
The Sharks (5-20, 2-16) had a seven-point first half lead reversed by the Hawks (7-17, 5-11) with a 17-0 run. HNU never trailed again.
The Sharks got a double-double from junior
Trey Chapman of Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg who scored 13 points with 11 rebounds. He joined junior
Trey Miller of Mukilteo, Wash./Archbishop Murphy and sophomore
Jakob Kimura of Honolulu/Punahou who each scored 13 points, with Miller and Kimura grabbing six boards each.
The Hawks were led by Edward Gray with 21 points and four assists. L.J. Smith contributed 15 points, Travis Patrick 13 points and Babacar Thiombane 10 points with a team-high eight rebounds.
HPU shot 41 percent from the floor (25-of-61), including 4-of-16 (25 percent) from the 3-point arc. The Sharks connected on 17-of-28 (61 percent) from the foul line. HNU shot 48 percent (26-of-54) from the field, including 46 percent (10-of-22) from behind the arc. The Hawks made 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the charity stripe. The Sharks outrebounded the Hawks 36-33, and had 10 turnovers versus 11.
The Sharks opened the game with a 6-0 run after a layup and free throws by Chapman, and extended the lead to seven at 10-3 with 15:06 to play in the first half after a jumper from freshman

HNU answered the opening salvo, with two Thiombane free throws started a run and the Sharks went cold. A Gray steal and layup gave the Hawks the lead with 11:35 remaining in the half, but the Sharks couldn't respond. When the dust cleared with a Patrick free throw after a seven-minute stretch, the Hawks had a 17-0 run to take a 10-point lead at 20-10.
After swapping a few scores, the Sharks got an 8-0 run of their own in the last 2:44 of the half and trailed by just two at 31-29 after a fast break layup by Miller heading to halftime.
HPU cut the lead to one early in the second half, but the Hawks rebuilt the double-digit advantage. The Sharks didn't shirk, working back through the half. Kimura hit a pair of layups and Chapman added a pair of free throws to reduce the Hawk lead to 63-62 with 5:18 remaining.
The Hawks got a Patrick 3-pointer answered by a Kimura layup for a 66-54 difference with 4:22 left, but Patrick responded with a pair of free throws and a Smith 3-pointer for a 7-point advantage and took the wind out of the HPU sails. The Hawks stretched the lead to nine for the final of 80-71.
The Sharks close their northern California trip with their final road game of the season when they visit Fresno Pacific on Tuesday. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. HST (7:30 p.m. PST) at the FPU Special Events Center.
