HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University used an early 11-0 run blow past Chaminade 58-43 in PacWest Conference play at The Shark Tank.
 
The Sharks (9-18, 6-14) swept the Silverswords (1-19, 0-16) in the season series with the triumph.
 
Junior Tavia Rowell of Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove led HPU with 13 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Jordyn Jensen of Truckee, Calif./Bishop Manogue came off the bench with 11 points and graduate student Julia Razo of Woodland, Calif./St. Francis posted 10 points in her final game. Freshman Allison Ross of Boise, Idaho/Boise chipped in nine points with seven rebounds.
 
The Silverswords got a pair of double-doubles in their final game. Michaella Dean scored 12 points with 16 rebounds, and Sasha Phillip added 11 points and 11 boards.
 
The Sharks shot 18-of-65 (29 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-29 (21 percent) from the 3-point arc. HPU hit 16-of-20 (80 percent) at the foul line. Chaminade connected on 17-of-59 (29 percent) from the field, but did not make a 3-pointer going 0-for-8. The Swords were 9-of-19 (47 percent) from the charity stripe. Chaminade outrebounded HPU 51-43, but turned the ball over 21 times to the Sharks 13 turnovers.
 
Chaminade grabbed their only lead of the game when Paige Relph made a layup after an offensive rebound to go up 2-0 in the first minute of the contest. HPU countered with a Rowell fast-break layup to tie the contest, then added a 3-pointer on her next trip down the floor to key the 11-0 run that put the Sharks up to stay. But the Swords were going down easily, allowing HPU just two more points in the final six minutes of the quarter and adding six points of their own as the Sharks led 13-8 at the quarter break.
 
In the second quarter HPU used a 10-3 run capped by a pair of Razo free throws to get a double-digit lead. A Ross fast-break layup gave the Sharks a 15-point advantage and HPU settled for a 34-21 lead at halftime.
 
The Swords clawed back to cut the HPU lead to nine, only to have the Sharks go on an 8-2 run to bring the lead back to 15. HPU finished the third quarter up 47-33.
 
The Sharks and Swords traded scores during the final 10 minutes, with HPU pushing the lead out to 18 on a Razo 3-pointer with 2:39 to play, and ended the contest with a 58-43 triumph.
 
The Sharks had hoped to qualify for the PacWest Conference Tournament with the win, but Fresno Pacific defeated Holy Names 79-56 in a rescheduled contest on Sunday. That win gave the Sunbirds the final tournament berth by percentage points to end the HPU season.
