Sharks Take Two From Fresno Pacific

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University swept a PacWest Conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday, beating Fresno Pacific 6-5 and 9-4 at Hans L'Orange Park.
 
The Sharks (11-8, 5-3) let the Sunbirds (9-7, 2-4) take the lead in both ends of the twinbill before coming back for the two wins.
 
The Sharks were led offensively by senior D.J. Stephens of Nanakuli, Hawai'i/Saint Louis who went 5-for-8 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Richard Higa of Honolulu/University Lab went 4-for-8, with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman T.J. Smith of Sacramento, Calif./Laguna Creek was 5-for-9 with two RBIs.
 
HPU also got solid pitching, with both starters getting wins on Wednesday. Junior righthander Markus Ramos of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell (2-0) got his second win in game one, going five innings allowing one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Sophomore Eddie Lee of Honolulu/Kalani had a solid performance going three innings, allowing two runs late on two hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Makana Quia of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu picked up his second save of the season, with a hit and a strikeout in his two batters faced.
 
Sophomore Jack O'Brien of San Diego/Westview (2-1) grabbed the win in game two, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and a walk and striking out six in five innings. Junior Cole Mayeshiro of Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani pitched four shutout innings with three hits and three strikeouts in recording his first save this season.
 
The Sunbirds plated the first run in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead in the series opener. The Sharks bounced back in the third inning, scoring four times on an RBI single by redshirt sophomore Nicholas Jio of San Diego/Scripps Ranch, a two RBI double from Stephens and an RBI single by senior Braxton Wehrle of Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman.
 
The Sunbird came up with two runs in the sixth before the Sharks got an RBI single from Smith in the seventh and an RBI single by Higa in the eighth.
 
The Sunbirds got two runs in the ninth before Quia got a strikeout to preserve the 6-5 win.
 
FPU scored three times to lead off game two in the first inning for the early advantage.
 
HPU chipped back with a Stephens sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and later Stephens scored on a groundball in the third. In the fourth, sophomore Jonathan Lucio of Grenada Hills, Calif./Kennedy stole home to tie the game, then got an RBI single from Smith to take the 4-3 lead.
 
The Sunbirds answered to tie the game in the fifth, but the Sharks exploded for three more runs in the fifth on a two RBI double by Higa and a Higa scoring on a passed ball to go up 7-4. HPU added a Higa run in the seventh on an FPU fielding error, and an unearned run in the eighth as Jio scored on a double play after reaching on an error.
 
The Sunbirds threatened with extra base hits in the eighth and ninth, but Mayeshiro shut FPU down for the win.
 
The two teams are in action to wrap up the series on Thursday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
