WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Fresno Pacific on Thursday to close the series at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (11-10, 5-5) fell to the Sunbirds (11-7, 4-4) 6-5 in the opener and 12-2 in the seven-inning nightcap.
The Sharks got the lions share of their offensive production from sophomore
Cole Kashimoto of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Saint Louis who went 4-for-4 with two runs scored in the first game.
The top pitching performances came in relief for HPU from junior
Mac Leisher of Atlanta, Ga./Bloomington Ind. University who pitched four shutout innings allowing two hits with five strikeouts in the first game, and from sophomore
Max Beaulieu of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga going 3.2 innings allowing one run on one hit with a walk and six strikeouts.
Game one saw the Sunbirds open with a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and another in the second. HPU countered with an RBI ground out in the third.
In the fifth, the Sharks got an RBI bunt single on a squeeze from sophomore
Jonathan Lucio of Granada Hills, Calif./Kennedy, an RBI groundout and an RBI single from freshman T.J. Smith of Sacramento, Calif./Laguna Creek to make it 4-4.
The Sharks took the lead in the sixth when Kashimoto drilled an RBI single through the left side for a 5-4 advantage.
But the lead would be short-lived, a walk, a single and a stolen base set up a two-RBI single by Andrew Valdez for the 6-5 lead.
The Sharks had opportunities in the last three innings, but stranded five runners including two in the bottom of the ninth as FPU claimed the 6-5 win.
Reliever
Zack McHone of Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty Hills (0-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
The Sunbirds scored early and often in the second game, and held HPU to just one hit in the first three innings. FPU plated one run in the first, two in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth for an 11-0 lead.
The Sharks scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but that would be it.
Junior starter
Erik Peterson of San Jose, Calif./King's Academy (1-2) was charged with the loss.
HPU also closed their season-opening homestand with the loss. The Sharks start a week-long southern California road trip on Monday when they visit Point Loma for a pair of twinbills at Carrol Land Stadium. First pitch on Monday is set for 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
