Sharks Claim Two of Three Against Dominican

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University won the suspended game from Wednesday, then split a doubleheader against Dominican at Sand Island Park.

The Sharks (9-9, 3-3) completed their second game of the double-header from yesterday evening that was rained out with a 10-4 victory before jumping right in to another set of games against the Penguins (8-17, 5-11). Game one was highlighted by HPU's freshman Taylor Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle who threw a one hit shutout. She also struck out four in her third complete game shutout of the season moving to 6-5.

In the third inning of game one, junior Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua singled up the middle and advanced all the way to third on a Dominican throwing error. She was brought home with a base hit from Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City giving the Sharks a 1-0 advantage.
HPU sealed the deal in the sixth with a two out parade of hits and errors eventually closing the frame at 4-0.

The Penguins' Shelby Keltner threw for five innings allowing one unearned run on five hits and three strikeouts but suffered the loss moving to 4-10 on the year. Rosa Leguria finished the game with three unearned runs on three hits and walk.

Game two was a close one ending exactly on the drop dead time of 4:00 p.m. Dominican gained some momentum after a two run homer to center by freshman Alicia Garcia in the third inning.
The Sharks were able to answer back in the fourth with a lead off double from freshman Jewel Larson of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City. She was brought to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly brining it to 2-1 Dominican.

The Penguins added one more in the fifth eventually ending the game at 3-1.

Thompson came back to start the second game going for another three innings allowing two earned runs on two hits with a strikeout. Senior pitcher Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista, who had pitched three innings from the halted game yesterday, pitched the final four frames of game two allowing an earned run on six hits with a strikeout.

DUC's Kathryn Carvalho pitched the first four innings allowing the one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts. She moves to 2-4 on the year with the game two win. Both Leguria and Keltner came in to finish the game with Keltner throwing two and a third innings with no hits and two strikeouts for her third save of the year.

The Sharks are back next week Tuesday and Wednesday for double headers against Holy Names. First pitch is slotted for 1:00 p.m. HST at Howard A. Okita Field.
